About this project

UNESCO Sites of Memory

Why make this website?

This website is just one of many Belmont University Honors projects from the 2023 graduating class. The focus of the scholars in this Honors cohort was on Fort Negley, and each student’s project connects to the fort in some way. This website’s author, Morgan, was inspired by the fort’s designation as a Site of Memory, and seeks to inform the public about these sites. Dialogue is a crucial part of reconciliation and peace, and her goal is to facilitate more discussion through this site.

remember the past

Since 1945

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization was officially founded in November, 1945 at a UN Conference where 44 countries decided to create an organization that embodied a genuine culture of peace. The world was coming out of the utter havoc caused by WWII, and the organization wanted to prevent the outbreak of another world war.

Today, UNESCO works in accordance with the 17 sustainability goals laid out by the UN. They seek to develop educational tools, promote the dignity of all cultures, and reaffirm humanity.
