Belmont Honors

Website Creator

My name is Morgan. I’m a student at Belmont University in Nashville who was inspired by the story of freedom at Fort Negley. I wanted to create an online space where significant historical sites were displayed. Before undertaking this project, I had never heard of UNESCO, much less the Routes of Enslaved Peoples Project or Sites of Memory. I had also never visited Fort Negley even though it is 10 minutes away from campus. So often we live near significant sites, but are ignorant of their history. This website aims to inform the American public and inspire reflection.

This project couldn’t have been completed without the help of many others. Special thanks to Dr. Mary Ellen Pethel, my professor, for her enthusiasm, advice, and knowledge. I wouldn’t have known where to begin without her. Additional thanks to Dr. Jane Landers, Dr. Angela Sutton, and Dr. Lee Williams, both for their help with this project and for their amazing work in the community: advocating, informing, and fighting for the rights of all people. Finally, I want to acknowledge the people whose ancestors arrived in this nation as captives, taken against their wills. I hope this project honors their memory and highlights their resilience, bravery, and courage.
